Last week Thursday, our botanical compass pointed us just ten kilometres west of Port Edward to an extraordinary ecological anomaly. The wind arrived before us at the Red Desert Nature Reserve, cool and insistent. Above us, the sky was a low ceiling of grey, heavy with the threat of rain that never quite arrived. Thank goodness.

For Pondoland CREW, our customary Thursday ritual always begins the same way: a warm cup of coffee/ tea, a quick catch-up, and then we’re off in search of plants.

We had barely entered the reserve before our eyes caught sight of the resilient little shrublet Gnidia nodiflora, belonging to the Thymelaeaceae family. Its species name, nodiflora, literally means “flowering at the nodes.” Instead of pushing out a big cluster of blooms at the very tip of the branch, it tucks its pale, creamy-yellow blossoms directly into the side joints of the stem, right where the leaves attach. Each delicate, four-lobed flower opens to reveal a vivid orange-yellow centre, contrasting beautifully with the red-tipped, hairy-margined leaves surrounding them. You need to have a close look to truly appreciate it.

Nearby was Heliophila elongata. This delicate, sun-loving plant belongs to the Brassicaceae family. Its slender, upright stem held a cluster of pale cream buds at the tip, below which a graceful flower opened its four white petals in a distinct cross shape to expose a soft yellow centre. Botany is something to be done slowly and precisely so that even the smallest treasure reveals itself.

With a flowering window stretching from August to October, Eulophia parviflora is a terrestrial orchid we will see often this time of year, but we will always relish the sight of it. Belonging to the Orchidaceae family, its genus name draws from the Greek words meaning a “well-formed crest” or “plume,” pointing directly to the ornate, rigid ridges that line its lip.

Next, Tracy found *Erigeron primulifolius—not so nice. Native to South America, this introduced perennial herb is an exotic species in our veld. Logging these finds helps us map the distribution of exotic and potentially invasive species across our biomes.

Because it is so often seen, we tend to ignore the beautifully structured flower heads of Cyperus niveus var. leucocephalus (historically recorded as Cyperus obtusiflorus var. obtusiflorus). This perennial sedge belongs to the Cyperaceae family. Taxonomists merged our regional plants into the broader African Cyperus niveus complex after realising that their subtle structural variations overlap completely. Its fitting new variety name, leucocephalus, literally means “white-headed”—a perfect description of the rounded scales that pack tightly together to form its dense, spherical, snow-white inflorescences.

Drawn to the vibrant, wine-red new leaves of Eugenia capensis, we noted how highly adapted it is to harsh environments. Belonging to the Myrtaceae family, this dune myrtle is perfectly adapted to buffer the relentless, salt-laden sea winds. Its mature leaves are thick, glossy, and leathery, structurally optimised to conserve moisture. True to form, the Red Desert Nature Reserve never fails to deliver a masterclass in resilience—where every plant, no matter how small or battered by the elements, tells a story of survival.

Next, we spotted Helichrysum acutatum. While we had seen this species during previous weeks, it had presented itself in its characteristic dense, multi-stemmed cluster growth form. Seeing it here felt entirely different. This solitary specimen stood erect, perfectly showcasing the architectural layout of the species. Instead of being crowded out by a thick clump of foliage, its large, velvety, silver-grey basal leaves spread against the ground in a beautifully clear, ground-hugging rosette. Leaning in closely, we verified the diagnostic keys that confirmed its identity despite the unfamiliar growth habit: the large basal leaves displayed the distinct, prominent “triplinerved” pattern—three parallel veins radiating boldly from the base—and tapered into a broad, winged petiole that clasped tightly around the bottom of the stem. A single woolly stalk reached upward, holding a dense, flat-topped cluster of striking, turmeric-yellow flower heads with their signature sharply pointed, papery bracts. Encountering this structural variation among the grasslands of the reserve reminded us that nature rarely adheres to a single form. It forces you to look beyond standard guide descriptions, hunt for the structural fingerprints, and appreciate how local microclimates shape a plant’s physical expression.

Then we found another Gnidia, this time Gnidia coriacea—the leathery Cape saffron. Spotting two species from the same genus during a single walk is always an excellent lesson in evolutionary design. While the Gnidia nodiflora we logged earlier hides its flowers away at the leaf nodes, Gnidia coriacea carries its clusters proudly at the very tips of its branches. True to its species name, its smooth, hairless leaves are stiff and strikingly leathery, providing a tough anatomical shield against the punishing coastal elements. Its compact heads of yellow floral tubes flush against the rigid foliage offered a completely different structural profile to its more delicate sibling. Walking through the veld at Red Desert with fellow Pondoland CREW members reminds us that the joy of discovery is always magnified when shared with passionate eyes.

Trailing close to the ground through the grass was Ipomoea crassipes. The structural beauty of the flowers is so cleverly adapted for survival here. The bright white limb funnels down into a deep, purplish-pink throat, creating a vivid evolutionary bullseye that draws bees and beetles straight into the tight, hairy floral tunnel to ensure pollination. It is a fleeting masterclass in efficiency—these blooms expand fully for the morning sun and systematically collapse by afternoon, maximising pollinator access while conserving vital moisture against the drying coastal winds. At this point you are not quite sure which plant to look at next, as the veld is full of flowers beckoning to you. Peek further into the grassy matrix, however, and you notice the striking Cyanotis speciosa, belonging to the Commelinaceae family. Commonly known as doll’s powderpuff, its genus name stems from the Greek words meaning “blue ear.” It is a species famous for its striking colour variability; the flowers can shift seamlessly from deep violet-blue and bright mauve to delicate pinks or even soft whites. The specimen we saw put on an absolute show, flashing brilliant electric-mauve petals tucked into compact, overlapping green bracts. What truly captures your attention are the stamens—heavily bearded with a dense fluff of hairs that match the vibrant petals, from which a cluster of conspicuous, bright yellow anthers boldly protrude like miniature gold pins pushed into a velvet cushion.

Next, Uschi and Tracy noticed Afrosciadium natalense with its very linear, trifoliate leaves. Belonging to the Apiaceae family, this perennial tuberous herb is a specialised endemic to our region. While most of its carrot-family cousins produce highly dissected, feathery foliage, Afrosciadium natalense stands out for its remarkably fine, narrow structural blueprint. Crowning these slender stalks are terminal compound umbels, holding tiny clusters of greenish-white flowers that sway gently with the incoming wind—but not on this day, as the wind was howling. A Gladiolus inandensis was holding its own against the wind.

Gail called to Uschi and Tracy to come and have a look at a Wahlenbergia. Dainty, crisp, star-shaped bells bobbed around in the wind on naked green wires, where tiny sessile leaves clung alternately to the stem. Leaning down to look at the plant, we found it difficult to identify. Was it Wahlenbergia paucidentata or Wahlenbergia undulata? This hardcore survivor had sacrificed its lush leaves to endure the harsh climate—a conundrum for sure. You need to look exceptionally closely at a few key factors. Do the stalkless leaves attach directly to the main stem with a slight wrap at the base, laxly alternating up the lower stalk before drastically shrinking into tiny, sparse scales upward? Do their hidden, wavy margins bunch into a narrow, three-dimensional, U-shaped groove lined with microscopic glandular teeth? If so, this points to Wahlenbergia undulata.

In contrast, Wahlenbergia paucidentata lacks this delicate, wrapping base architecture, and its stems are completely naked at the top. Where is it growing? While Wahlenbergia paucidentata prefers the protection of damp, rocky mist-belt grasslands and mountain slopes, Wahlenbergia undulata is frequently found in highly open, bare environments like the Red Desert Nature Reserve. The conclusion was that we were looking at was Wahlenbergia undulata. Between the morphological hairsplitting and the taxonomic tangles, your brain easily starts to feel as undulated as the leaves.

Taking the next step, you had to be careful not to stomp on the whimsical Schizaea pectinata. Belonging to the Schizaeaceae family, this unusual little geophyte is affectionately known as the toothbrush fern—and it is arguably one of the oddest-looking ferns in South Africa. It is easy to pass it by, as its tough, slender, and wiry fronds blend seamlessly into the surrounding grasses and sedges. The true marvel is its specialised fertile structure at the absolute apex of the stalk. Once unfurled, the frond tip transforms into a small, compact, comb-like head where pairs of linear segments push straight upward like a dense row of toothbrush bristles. These tiny teeth house the sporangia packed tightly along their sides, protecting the precious spores until they are ready to be swept away by the coastal wind. Centella glabrata var. glabrata is another plant that is easy to overlook. Unlike many of its round-leaved Centella cousins that thrive in wetlands, this tough variety is perfectly adapted to drier coastal grasslands. Its small, stiff, hairless leaves narrow down into wedge-shaped tips, hiding tiny, inconspicuous flowers grouped closely at the soil level.

Emerging across the veld in the damp was Disa similis. The compact spikes hold dense clusters of mauve-pink flowers punctuated by deep magenta bracts. If you look down into the centre of each bloom, the tips of the lateral petals and the labellum lip are distinctly tipped with bright yellow markings. While they completely lack nectar, these golden highlights are thought to mimic pollen or anthers. This deceptive visual trick serves a vital evolutionary purpose, successfully luring in pollen-seeking beetles to ensure the orchid’s pollen bundles are mechanically collected and transferred. Tracy wondered if it might be mimicking a Nemesia species. It does look suspiciously like one.

At this point, while sploshing through the wet, uneven bog, the group split up to focus on finding Wurmbea kraussii. Heading up a rather steep hill was challenging with a blustering wind and a heavy backpack. You have to wonder what a botanist would need to carry to make their backpack that heavy. Growing in a thick patch of grass under some Strelitzia nicolai was Coleus hadiensis, formerly known as Plectranthus hadiensis. Belonging to the Lamiaceae family, it is immediately recognisable by its deeply crenate leaf margins and a soft, tomentose coating of fine hairs. When gently brushed, the leaves release a wonderful aromatic scent. Pushing up from its low-growing foliage were terminal spikes of delicate pale pink flowers. Regional spurflowers like this one were historically classified under Plectranthus due to an unreliable anatomical rule regarding stamen fusion, but a comprehensive global DNA study proved this massive grouping lacked a single common ancestor. This modern genetic analysis prompted the formal reinstatement of the genus Coleus, reassigning hundreds of species based on their true evolutionary lineage.

Once over the top of the hill, we noticed the tightly packed flower spikes of a soon-to-be orchid. Speculating which one it could be, we started to move off, and then exploded with excitement when we spotted one starting to flower that we could identify as Eulophia ensata. This robust terrestrial orchid is always a marvelous find. Its species name, ensata, means “sword-shaped”—a perfect description of the stiff, erect leaves piercing straight through the low vegetation. Catching it right at the beginning of its flowering window was an absolute highlight, as the dense spike revealed nodding blossoms with a bright, butter-yellow lip that contrasted beautifully against the greenish-yellow outer tepals.

Chamaecrista comosa stood like tiny acacias in the veld. Belonging to the Fabaceae family, this semi-erect perennial herb perfectly mimics a miniature thorn tree with its fine, feathery, pinnately compound leaves arranged in neat pairs. Their bright, deep yellow flowers each boast five asymmetric petals that flare outward to contrast sharply with the rigid green foliage.

There were a few pom-pom white flower heads, their little mauve anthers dusted with pollen like icing sugar, dancing around in the wind, which had really picked up. A quick glance at the leaves confirmed it was Cephalaria oblongifolia. Xyris natalensis, a tough, rush-like plant from the Xyridaceae family, held its green, wire-thin stalks erect, each topped with a shiny, golden-brown cone. Out of these tiny, armoured heads, delicate yellow three-petaled flowers peeked into the sunshine, braving the gusts. It acts as an ecological sponge; its dense root systems filter water while anchoring loose soils against heavy downpours. Against a large anthill, a single, bedraggled Senecio speciosus still looked striking with its magenta ray florets. The secret to its survival in this blustery environment was clear. Supporting the bright flower head was a tight, cup-like involucre of green bracts, densely blanketed in sticky, web-like glandular hairs. These micro-hairs help trap ambient moisture and shield the delicate disc florets from the strong winds. Down at the very base sat its protective rosette of attractively toothed, crinkled, and leathery green leaves.

We had reached the spot where we had previously seen Wurmbea kraussii, but there were none to be seen. We were too late, or maybe too early, or perhaps they were simply taking the year off. We did, however, find Satyrium longicauda, commonly known as the blushing bride orchid. Its tall, elegant flower spikes stood out, capped in columns of hooded, blush-pink blossoms. It has two remarkably long, wire-thin nectar spurs. They measure anywhere from 3 to 4.5 cm in length, hanging vertically downward. This distinct feature is what inspired its specific scientific name, longicauda, which literally translates from Latin to mean “long-tailed.” Amongst the Satyrium longicauda was Cyrtanthus brachyscyphus, its cluster of bright, nodding orange-red tubes flashing like tiny firecrackers. It is endemic strictly to South Africa’s Eastern Cape and KwaZulu-Natal provinces.

Scanning the veld as we walked, the bright white faces of Dimorphotheca fruticosa caught the sunlight. The daisy-like flowers flashed a subtle surprise as the wind flipped them, revealing delicate lilac-tinted undersides on their outer petals. Tritonia gladiolaris’s stunning, gentle yellow flowers seemed to bow to the beautiful Merwilla plumbea—a nod, maybe, to the sheer, towering majesty of the blue scilla’s tall floral spires rising gracefully above the open, rocky hillside. Next we saw the stripey pantaloons of Silene burchellii, often aptly named the gunpowder plant. Its slender, erect stems held up one-sided clusters of deeply split, petals. While they were still very much in flower—waiting patiently for the cooler evening air to fully uncurl and invite their moth pollinators—their local name looks ahead to the next phase of their lifecycle. Once these blossoms drop, they leave behind dried seed capsules filled with tiny, dark, rounded seeds that rattle inside like vintage black musket shot. Pushing on through the veld, our eyes were drawn to a small Eriosema preptum, or the distinguished Eriosema. This KwaZulu-Natal endemic rose on hairy stems, showing off densely woolly leaf undersides and proud, elevated racemes packed with small, striking yellow-orange blossoms intricately veined in red.

We had moved off in the direction of the large swathe of Watsonia pillansii, only to stumble across Raphionacme galpinii, a fascinating, specialised succulent geophyte belonging to the Apocynaceae family. It was named in honour of Dr Ernest Edward Galpin, a prominent South African banker and amateur botanist. Running a finger along the plant revealed soft, velvety leaves heavily covered in fine white hairs, forming a protective coat over the tight cluster of flower buds. At the centre of this downy cushion, its small, striking flowers had opened—deep, velvety chocolate-maroon stars displaying pale, contrasting centres. Right nearby, another specimen proudly displayed the next stage of its cycle: a pair of developing seed pods. These erect, velvety green follicles shot straight up into the air like a pair of slender, fuzzy horns, safely cradling the future seeds until they are ready to split open and catch the wind.

We walked through the Watsonia, as the veld continued to yield botanical treasures. We spotted a rather pale Eulophia hians var. hians, a terrestrial orchid showcasing tall, erect stems topped with delicate, intricately shaped blossoms that stood as elegant rewards for careful observation. A short distance away, an aromatic Athrixia phylicoides, widely known as Bushman’s tea, caught Tracy’s attention with its bright mauve ray petals and golden central discs. It was lunch time and so we headed to a rocky outcrop for shelter from the wind. Amongst the rocks, a vibrant splash of deep magenta drew us toward Hilliardiella hirsuta, its heavily wrinkled, puckered green leaves and fluffy flower clusters adding a beautiful, rich texture to the surrounding coastal flora. Settling down out of the wind, Alf, Anne, and Hilary joined Gail and Tracy for lunch, where the surrounding rocks made for comfy seating.

Lunch finished, we walked towards the stream. Along the way, we saw more evidence of plant poaching—an ongoing problem in the Red Desert Nature Reserve. Amidst these sobering sights, we came across Asclepias albens, showing off its highly geometric, pale, creamy-green flower clusters typical of the milkweed family. Growing almost flat against the ground was Cycnium adonense, the blotting paper flower. Looking closely at the blossoms, they truly resembled crumpled pieces of textured paper, though instead of being pristine, they were already heavily speckled and stained with dark, bruised spots. We could see firsthand why it earns its name; the slightest touch or injury to the delicate tissue triggers rapid enzymatic oxidation. This chemical reaction causes the sensitive, velvety petals to quickly bleed into a stark, deep ink-black across their surfaces and along their ragged edges.

At this point, one might expect a conclusion, but the Red Desert Nature Reserve has much to offer. The next plant always gets a squeal of glee: Xysmalobium involucratum, known in Afrikaans as the hongersnoodbossie, or famine bush. True to its name, this clever milkweed hides a thick, fleshy underground tuber that historically served as an emergency food source during times of severe drought. Extensive culinary knowledge is necessary, though, to turn the bitter, carrot-like root into something palatable.

The wind was now howling, literally pushing us back up the hill. Tucked low were the spiky, needle-thin twigs of Muraltia lancifolia, while the tall, white flower spikes of Hebenstretia dura thrashed around nearby, their tiny petals flashing signature orange throats. It was so windy that each step became a test of balance against the buffeting gusts. You gain a new respect for the plants growing in the Sandstone Coastal Sourveld. Oxygonum dregeanum is a resilient perennial herb belonging to the Polygonaceae family that features succulent leaves and small white flowers. There are 10 subspecies, but this is a conundrum for another time. Our final plant was Euphorbia natalensis, with vibrant, cup-shaped, yellowish-green cyathia rimmed with distinct, delicate crimson-red margins, holding fast as the blustery air settled over the sand. It had been an extraordinary walk, but with the weather turning, it was time to call it a day.
