HNTA Herbarium

The Hugh Nicholson - Tony Abbott Herbarium is included in the international register of herbaria with with the acronym PCE. The herbarium is housed in the Ezemvelo KZN Wildlife buildings at Beacon Hill in the Umtamvuna Nature Reserve near Port Edward.

The vouchers in the herbarium have been collected mainly from the Pondoland Centre of Endemism although others come from further afield. The collection includes vouchers from the Oribi Gorge herbarium, the Mbumbazi herbarium and the Skyline herbarium (Hugh Nicholson's private collection) together with a large number of specimens collected by Tony Abbott and latterly, by Kate Grieve.

With support from Ezemvelo KZNWildife, volunteer work was done over several years to capture the details of all the vouchers in the collection electronically in the BRAHMS database. Photographs of all the vouchers are available and these have been linked to the relevant voucher data. For access to this PCE_DATABASE, application should be made to Craig Mulqueeny at Ezemvelo KZN Wildlife at Craig.Mulqueeny@kznwildlife.com.

Enquiries about the herbarium collection or requests to visit can be sent to PCEHerbarium@gmail.com
