A gentle day botanising at Ken Gaze's farm in Port Edward. Uschi joined us which was just lovely as we had not seen her for a while. Her knowledge as is Dorothy's is incredible and always willing to help identify the flowers should we be stumped.
The grassland was full of Dianthus zeyheri, and growing in the shade we found Thunbergia natalensis, Commelina erecta and Commelina africana. In the grassland we found Sisyranthus virgatus and Sisyranthus imberbis. This is such a tiny flower that it easily blends in with the grass and not be seen.
We
found the little brownish-purple orchid Eulophia tenella growing on the rocky
outcrop. This orchid is self pollinating
and flowers between November and January.
Eulophia angolensis waved its
long lemon-yellow heads. This is a robust terrestrial orchid
that can reach 1.5m tall. This orchid
flowers between December and March.
