A visit to Klipspringer to look for orchids (Friday 3 March 2017)

At the request of visiting photographer Herbert Staerker, we went up to the Klipspringer area to see what orchids were flowering. Klipspringer is well known to local orchid enthusiasts as home to many species of orchid.

While we found several species, only a few of these were flowering. The first of these was Disperis micrantha, but these will be at their best in a week or two as only one or two flowers were open. We also found the basal leaf clusters of Holothrix orthoceras, but it will be some time before this species flowers.

We were however lucky to find Brownleea coerulea and Stenoglottis fimbriata in flower in some secluded locations.
